About Us

Adam’s Get Down Gumbo was founded in 2019 by Adam Perkins, a Northern California native and restaurateur.

Adam was introduced to southern cuisine by his then roommate Tommy.

Adam fell in love with Southern cuisine in the early 2000’s when a new roommate moved into his Sacramento apartment from New Orleans. Not only did Tommy and Adam become best friends, but he also introduced Adam to all of the dishes that make Louisiana cooking so incredible...Gumbo, Jambalaya, Red Beans & Rice, and the like.

Adam immediately knew he had a passion for Creole and Cajun cuisine. For the next couple of years Adam watched, experimented, and learned how to cook with and utilize the explosive flavors of Louisiana. After almost 20 years of working, managing, and consulting in various restaurants in both Northern and Southern California, Adam decided to open his own business.

Adam perfected his Get Down Gumbo recipe over the years.

In June 2019, Adam’s Get Down Gumbo was born, specializing in the cuisine he loves and the recipes he has perfected.

The menu at Get Down Gumbo is focused on quality over quantity, with gumbo being our signature dish. We chose to focus on gumbo because it is our absolute favorite dish to create and enjoy, and it is so underrepresented in the Southern California food scene.

Our gumbo is deep and dark, with a complex and palatable flavor profile; it truly is unique to our concept. Since we cook our roux to such a dark color, almost black, it does not incorporate fully in and become gravy-like, as with many gumbos found in California. It distinctly flavors the gumbo, and then we skim most of it out. What this leaves is a non-greasy, non-fat-laden, delicious soup; not a heavy stew-like dish.

NOBODY does gumbo like this in Southern California. At least not that we’ve found!

Also, on our menu is our Cajun-Style Brown Jambalaya. This rice dish has turned out to be almost as popular as our gumbo! Loaded with flavor, our jambalaya is uniquely our own. One bite and you will understand why!

Occasionally, or upon request, we will throw down specials like Red Beans & Rice, Po’Boy sandwiches, and Beignets.

Adam's Get Down Gumbo selected for L.A. Magazine's 10 Best Soups Available in LA

LOS ANGELES Magazine names Adam's Get Down Gumbo as one of the 10 "Best Soups L.A. Has to Offer!"

This unique gumbo, which involves cooking roux until it’s deeply dark, is simultaneously smokier and less greasy than what you expect from a Cajun dish. It’s loaded with chicken and andouille sausage, and there’s a pleasant hit of palate-jolting bitterness.
